Academic Advisor & Advisee Responsibilities

The student can expect the academic advisor to:

• Assist the student in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on the student’s life and personal goals.
• Understand and effectively interpret the curriculum, graduation requirements, and university and college policies and procedures.
• Assist the student in gaining decision-making skills and in assuming responsibility for educational plans and achievements.
• Encourage and guide the student as he or she defines and develops realistic goals.
• Encourage and support the student as he or she develops clear and attainable educational plans.
• Provide the student with information about, and strategies for, utilizing the available resources and services on campus.
• Monitor progress toward meeting the student’s degree plan and goals.
• Assist the student in working closely with other faculty.
• Be accessible for meetings via office hours, one-on-one appointments, telephone, or e-mail.
• Maintain confidentiality.

The academic advisor can expect students to:

• Schedule regular appointments or make regular contacts with your academic advisor during each semester.
• Arrive prepared to each appointment with questions or material for discussion.
• Be an active learner by participating fully in the academic advising experience.
• Accept responsibility for decisions.
• Ask questions if they do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
• Maintain a record of progress toward degree plan and goals, keeping all necessary official documents.
• Complete all assignments and follow through on recommendations of the academic advisor.
• Gather all relevant decision-making information.
• Clarify personal values and goals.
• Be knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures.
