Academic Advisor & Advisee Responsibilities
Both the student and the academic advisor have responsibilities for an effective and beneficial partnership. In addition to both being active participants in the relationship, each is additionally responsible for the following:
The student can expect the academic advisor to:
- Assist the student in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on the student’s life and personal goals.
- Understand and effectively interpret the curriculum, graduation requirements, and university and college policies and procedures.
- Assist the student in gaining decision-making skills and in assuming responsibility for educational plans and achievements.
- Encourage and guide the student as he or she defines and develops realistic goals.
- Encourage and support the student as he or she develops clear and attainable educational plans.
- Provide the student with information about, and strategies for, utilizing the available resources and services on campus.
- Monitor progress toward meeting the student’s degree plan and goals.
- Assist the student in working closely with other faculty.
- Be accessible for meetings via office hours, one-on-one appointments, telephone, or e-mail.
- Maintain confidentiality.
The academic advisor can expect students to:
- Schedule regular appointments or make regular contacts with your academic advisor during each semester.
- Arrive prepared to each appointment with questions or material for discussion.
- Be an active learner by participating fully in the academic advising experience.
- Accept responsibility for decisions.
- Ask questions if they do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
- Maintain a record of progress toward degree plan and goals, keeping all necessary official documents.
- Complete all assignments and follow through on recommendations of the academic advisor.
- Gather all relevant decision-making information.
- Clarify personal values and goals.
- Be knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures.
