Prestigious Fellowships & Scholarships

The long legacy of academic excellence at Butler University is exemplified by the successes of our current students and alumni in pursuing a wide array of prestigious scholarships and fellowships including Boren, Rhodes, Truman, Gilman, Fulbright, and Goldwater awards. In addition, Bulldogs have been national finalists or recipients of other prestigious scholarships—accomplishments that bolster graduate school applications and résumés.

Fulbright Program

Butler University is proud to have been acknowledged by the Fulbright program as a Top Producing Institution. The Fulbright grant is one of the oldest and most prestigious national awards in the country. Alumni of the Fulbright program have achieved distinction in government, science, the arts, business, philanthropy, and athletics. Typically awarded to graduating seniors, the grant funds individuals to teach English or to conduct research abroad. The Fulbright grant also funds international post-graduate study at some universities. The grant period usually lasts for one year and is open to all majors and fields of study. Fulbright currently operates in 140 countries. For more information, visit HTTPS://US.FULBRIGHTONLINE.ORG.

If you are student who is planning to apply for a Fulbright grant, please note that Butler applications each year are due by the second Monday in September. Following your submission, the Office of Prestigious Fellowships and Scholarships will schedule an interview with you and several faculty and staff members before the national deadline (typically second week of October).

Since 1990, 28 Butler seniors and alumni have received Fulbright grants that allowed them travel to such places as Bolivia/Peru, Ireland, Israel, Northern Ireland, and Spain to conduct research/study topics they are passionate about with global experts or to serve as English Teaching Assistants. In addition, since 2016, 10 Butler first-year and sophomore students have been selected to participate in Fulbright UK Summer Institutes; and even more Bulldogs have been national finalists or recipients of other prestigious scholarships—accomplishments that bolster graduate school applications and résumés.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is one of our nation’s most prestigious and competitive awards for rising juniors and seniors in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Butler University remains heavily dedicated to undergraduate education and training in STEM fields and has had several recent successful Goldwater scholars. To date, we have had 16 Goldwater scholars, including 5 scholars since 2020. More information about the Goldwater scholarship program can be accessed at http://goldwaterscholarship.gov/.

If you are student who is planning to apply for a Goldwater scholarship, please note that Butler applications each year are due by December 31. Following your submission, the Office of Prestigious Fellowships and Scholarships will schedule an interview with you and several faculty and staff members prior to the national deadline (typically the end of January).
